The student nods

The teacher asks, “so you’ve decided this is what you want to do?”

“Yes” says the student.

“You’ve looked at all the options? You’ve weighed up all the pros and cons?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve thought about the potential losses and the potential gains?”

“I have.”

“You’ve created some space, some stillness, some quiet and listened to what your intuition is trying to tell you?”

He nods.

“You’ve considered how other people’s opinions and the environment you’re currently in could be biasing you?”

“Yep. And they’re not. This is my decision. No one else’s.”

“So this is what you need to do? This is what you must do?”

He nods again.

The teacher pauses. “Shall I be honest with you?”

“Please” replies the student.

“I think you’re lying. I think you’re in love with the idea of doing it. You just like how the thought of doing it makes you feel. You don’t want to do the work. You don’t want the challenge. You want the reward.”

“No that’s not…” begins the student.

“Listen. Go away and think about what I’ve said. Come back in a month.”

The student nods, gets up and leaves.
